  • 2023-02-27 - Childhood is a key time when it comes to maintaining a heritage language. A new book by Spanish and linguistics professor Silvina Montrul brings together three such languages—Hindi, Romanian, and Spanish—spoken in the U.S. and demonstrates how heritage speakers can end up driving language change as they try to reconcile their heritage with their environment.
  • 2023-02-24 - Faculty from Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education (SLATE), the Department of Linguistics, and the Program in Translation and Interpreting Studies are collaborating with the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to develop an online training program for interpreters for Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings in Illinois schools.
  • 2023-02-22 - The French undergraduate curriculum is set to undergo revisions, with the help of a highly competitive grant. Professor Daniel Nabil Maroun obtained $12,000 in funding from the French Embassy and the FACE Foundation (French-American Cultural Exchange) to develop new courses and rethink what language education looks like in the process.
