Waïl S. Hassan, Professor of Comparative and World Literature, has published a new book, co-edited with Rogério Lima, titled Literatura e (i)migração no Brasil/Literature and (Im)migration in Brazil (Edições Makunaima: Rio de Janeiro).
The fruit of a multi-year collaboration between the American Comparative Literature Association (ACLA) and the Brazilian Comparative Literature Association (ABRALIC), this wide-ranging book maps, for the first time, the field of Brazilian immigrant literature in the broadest sense.
The articles are divided into two categories: migration and immigration. The theme of migration includes seven articles that can be divided into three sub-categories: the migration of ideas and theories, and the temporary residence of foreigners in Brazil and of Brazilians abroad. The other 15 articles focus on German, Italian, Eastern and Central European Jewish, Syrian and Lebanese Arab, and Japanese immigration to Brazil.
In addition to co-writing the introduction, Hassan contributes two articles, one on the representation of Arabs in the work of Humberto de Campos (1920s-30s) and one on Syrian refugees in a 2019 telenovela called Órfãos da terra (Orphans of the Earth).
