Alumnae Spotlight: Lydia Catedral (PhD, Linguistics, 2018)

Lydia Catedral (PhD, Linguistics, 2018) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics and Translation at the City University of Hong Kong. She is currently teaching a General Education course called "Image of the City". She also has taught sociolinguistics, conversation analysis, pragmatics, and field and research methods in linguistics.

She works in both sociolinguistics and discourse analysis and her research focuses on how people use and understand language in relation to their national, moral and gendered identities in a globalizing world. Catedral has started a new research project on the sociolinguistic aspects of transnational domestic work in Hong Kong, a project for which she spent this past summer collecting data.

Quote: There's a lot I appreciate about my time and education at University of Illinois, but I feel particularly grateful for having received a really strong linguistics education as a foundation for my research and teaching, and also for the encouragement and opportunities for collaboration and interdisciplinary exploration.
