The School of Literatures, Cultures & Linguistics invited Dr. Christopher Thornton, director of the Division of Research Programs at the National Endowment for the Humanities, to visit the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus during the fall 2022 semester.

While here, he spoke in-depth about NEH grant opportunities, offered suggestions for submitting a successful application, and facilitated a mock panel.

About the speaker

Dr. Christopher Thornton is the director of the Division of Research Programs at the National Endowment for the Humanities, overseeing grants and fellowships in support of academic and public scholarship.  He joined the NEH in 2018 from the National Geographic Society, where he served as acting head of the grants program in support of science, education, and storytelling. Dr. Thornton sits on the scientific board of three international journals, was a member of the U.S. Commission to UNESCO, and is director emeritus of the World Heritage Site of Bat in the Sultanate of Oman.
