David Cooper, professor and head of the Department of Slavic Languages & Literatures, has been elected president of the Association of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES).
ASEEES was established in 1948 as a nonprofit, non-political, scholarly society. It's the leading international organization dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about Central Asia, the Caucasus, Russia, and Eastern Europe in regional and global contexts.
With over 3,500 members, ASEEES supports teaching, research, and publication relating to the study of the region and has cultivated the field’s intellectual landscape for seventy years through its chief publication, "Slavic Review," its annual convention, its book prizes, and its organizational newsletter.
ASEEES is housed at the University of Pittsburgh.
"This is a very prestigious recognition of David’s scholarly record and contributions to his discipline," said Mariselle Meléndez, director of the School of Literatures, Cultures & Linguistics. "To be elected as the president is a great honor indeed. Congratulations to David for such an important distinction and for representing our campus, the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, and SLCL so well."
