Charlotte Prieu and Sophie Luijten honored in ceremony on April 20

Charlotte Prieu of French and Italian and Sophie Luijten of Spanish and Portuguese recently were among those UIUC students honored in this year’s 9th Annual Diversity & Social Justice Education Social Justice Awards.

Prieu was named in the Outstanding Graduate category and Luijten in the Outstanding Undergraduate classification.

Prieu is a third-year PhD candidate in French Linguistics. This campus-level award recognizes Charlotte’s long-standing activism and academic engagement for social justice, including her important work in advocating for inclusive language in foreign language pedagogy.

Luijten is a junior majoring in global studies and Spanish, with a concentration in environmental sustainability and social responsibility. In October, she also received the Illinois International Undergraduate Achievement Award from the Illinois International Programs organization.

These awards recognize unsung undergraduate students, graduate students, alumni, staff/faculty members, and registered student organizations that have sought to address marginalization, oppression, and/or privilege in their communities. The recipients were honored during a ceremony held on April 20.
