In April Brian Walters, Assistant Professor of Classics, will receive both the distinguished and highly competitive 2019-20 LAS Dean's Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and the Campus Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.

Walters is one of five UIUC professors to receive the LAS Dean’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.

He has taught classics at Illinois for seven years. As a professor, he engages students by blending disciplinary approaches (philology, history, archaeology, reception, film, and music) and is praised by students as a “superb” teacher. Wrote one: “I am completely convinced my growth was because of the confidence I gained with Professor Walters.”

He and others receiving teaching awards will be honored at a ceremony on campus on April 15.

In addition to his teaching awards, Walters, who also serves the Department of the Classics as its undergraduate advisor, has published a new book, "The Deaths of the Republic: Imagery of the Body Politic in Ciceronian Rome" (Oxford University Press).

His new work is the first ever book-length treatment of body politic imagery in republican Rome. For more about the book: https://global.oup.com/academic/product/the-deaths-of-the-republic-9780198839576?q=walters%20deaths&lang=en&cc=us
