The School of Literatures, Cultures, and Linguistics sponsors conferences, colloquia, workshops and individual speakers, which enrich our research, pedagogical and public engagement mission. These diverse events contribute to creating a vibrant intellectual environment in which faculty and students can thrive.

Types of Sponsorship:

The School will consider the following types of sponsorship, based on the size of the event and nature of the activity supported, as well as the availability of funds:

  1. Individual (stand-alone) speaker and co-sponsorship of activities organized by non-SLCL units (maximum $500).
  2. SLCL Small Conference/Workshop, up to 15 participants (maximum $1,500)
  3. SLCL Large Conference, more than 15 participants (maximum $3,000)
  4. SLCL Recurring on-campus Conference (maximum $1,000 per AY)

SLCL Conferences Deadlines (#2, 3, 4): September 5, December 5, April 5.

Submissions for #2, 3, 4 are due by 5:00 p.m. on the date listed above. Applications submitted after the deadline will automatically be held over for the next deadline. 

Criteria:

Applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Relevance and impact of the activity to the department/unit, to the School and the University. Activities sponsored by more than one SLCL unit will have priority.
  • Co-sponsorship (including financial support) of the requesting unit and other units beyond SLCL is required.
  • Budget appropriateness, in terms of the activity proposed and of the sponsoring units’ available resources.
  • Student and/or community involvement or impact. Activities which engage students and/or the public will have priority.

Requirements and Eligibility:

  • Applications must be submitted well in advance of the event. Retroactive applications will not be considered.
  • Applications must be made by faculty in or outside SLCL, through an SLCL department/program, and supported by at least one SLCL Executive Officer.
  • Supporting unit must contribute financially to the event, in proportion to its available resources.
  • Specialized faculty may also apply. Applications may not be made directly by graduate students, although joint applications with SLCL faculty are acceptable.
  • SLCL must be prominently credited in all publicity for events it sponsors. If SLCL is the largest financial sponsor, the activity should be designated as SLCL Lecture/Conference plus the organizing department.
  • Single-unit activities will not be funded, but may receive partial support if funds are available.

Financial requirements:

  • No portion of these funds may be used for alcohol.
  • Financial support will have to be used within a year of the event. Funds that were not used after that date will have to be returned to SLCL.
  • All award expenditures must comply with University and State regulations for account administration, as outlined in the Business and Financial Policies and Procedures Manual.
